Its a shame this doesn't seem like it will be one of the greats. Star wars games used to be some of the best games back in the day even if you weren't a star wars fan. Battlefront 2, Rogue Squadron, KOTR, All such good games. Seems like these days the approach is to layer a star wars skin over something else for an easy cash in...

Sadly Fast Travel isn't really fast IE trigger a quest on 1 Continent ONLY to have the QUEST itself take place in on a different Continent/World map and No way to FAST travel FROM the NPC you talk to FOR the quest ONLY to NOT have the quest itself take place on the same Continent making it impossible to actually WARP to the location of the same quest after triggering it.

My copy will be here Thursday. Not that anyone who knows me will be surprised, but I ordered the steelbook version.

I love how there is like to sides of FF fans. Those who love X and VI and then those who love xii and xiii for example. I dont know why its ecspecially those games but i´ll take it. I like X, dont get me wrong but for me it was was of the weaker ones which I dont understand. I really tried to like it more but it didnt work. Probably the same for some when it comes to xii and xiii. XIII really is one of my favourites after IV and XVI. (This is not about the openings but about the games as a whole)

I do think IX is S tier for openings as I think you forgot to include the rest of the play and theater part with kidnapping Garnet in the first hour. My bias is showing through as I love the into to IX a lot as it captured me when I was younger.

Honestly, I’m starting to reconsider the idea of getting the platinum trophy for this game. Ever since I tried to tackle the harder challenges, I’ve slowly grown to hate this game.

High fps and thick black outlines on cell shaded character models. This is atrocious. It better be optional or the best mod ever just shot itself in the foot.

All my game decisions are based on the platinum so I have to see if I can tolerate the trophies. But if I do, I might do it just because my close friend has played a lot of open-world games and enjoyed them.

Anyone complaining about this is not an actual fan of the series or at least the classic games. That’s exactly how they were originally presented.

Love the tier list except I think 6 should be A. You gotta do a tier list also on Persona games opening and world of Warcraft games opening too! Would be awesome to see

FFVII is top of the list for me. Great cinematic, straight into a dungeon, then it slows down when you get to Sector 7 and met everyone. It’s perfect. VIII has a better opening cinematic but the moment just dies right after it for me. If it just threw us straight into the Dollet mission it might rank above VII. I love XII, it’s probably my second favorite overall, but yeah, the beginning is fairly dull. On the other hand, I’d say the first hour of XIII is pretty solidly A tier for me. Lastly, if XVI didn’t have the part with Titan and Shiva and just opened with Clive as a teen, I’d like it better. As is, it just feels so slow. Low B Tier for me.

FFXVI belongs in “A” tier. The third act and ending were terrible.

I mostly agree with these rankings. I would swap 9 and 16 with 8 and 14, respectively. But I admit my bias!

By the way, you shouldn’t have missed Zero! It’s so so so underrated. I personally think Zero has the strongest opening. (If not the best)

I don’t know why, I still think 15 is the best one by far, even though it’s unfinished in story, such a shame. The vibe is so strong. 16 is too cliché, which doesn’t look like a final fantasy.

I wish the creators of mods wood include screen reader capabilitys and navigateational sound indicators so the blind and visually impaired can also play their old classic games which they loved. I am one of them.

Another great tierlist! Totally agree with your S tier and for me, 7, 10 and 16 are just top tier on equal footing, each for their respective story.

No nostalgia in putting VII in S.... one of the most iconic openings (and just iconic scenes in general) in gaming history.

Imo ff6 atmosphere and theming is the most over rated in the series, the dark gritty steam punk setting is just really depresssing and feels like they tried really hard to make pixel graphics look realistic but lost the charm of pixel graphics in the exchange along with the time skip in the middle of the game, and the character building doesnt get good until a fair bit into the game when you get espers to learn magic and abilities 1,4, and 5 are all greatly more enjoyable for me than ff6

I probably won't get this right away, but it does look like something I would enjoy, so I'll put it on the list.

I agree on most of the tier list except for XV and XII (didn't finish it) XVI (I recently played the demo in PC. Will probably finish it since I feel like the story in demo is a hook for me) Now, XIV - it's an S tier for me. I believe a lot of people in the comment (or even among FF fans) didn't try it because it's an MMORPG. And I almost didn't... if not for Covid. The character and villains are some of the most well written and my most personal favorites in FF world. People should really try it (it's free now until the 2nd expansion Stormblood if I'm not mistaken)

For me 9 is the best hands down in terms of gameplay, characters and music

FF16 has one of the best openings to any game I've ever played, and while I enjoyed the rest of the game, it didn't come close to what those first few hours established imo

Played this version too though on Vita (haven't played SNES version yet...probably should sooner or later...maybe the first 3 games in 1 that released on Switch). Story's fairly decent, combat's...probably below average if I'm being honest (some aspects felt far too slow, especially with the gauge with the % under your character), areas could be annoying at times, and a few other nitpicks such as not liking the camera angle and a few others. Overall it's a decent to good game though I think I'd probably prefer playing the OG more with this camera PoV Imo the game needed a more Trials of Mana style remake if anything in terms of combat and camera PoV. Granted the game that needs a far more extensive work with its remake would be the first game as Adventures of Mana was not particularly fun imo (not surprising as it was mobile originally) and not just combat wise but the maps were annoying with how they were designed (not sure if they tried to 1 to 1 remake it like Trials but if they did they shouldn't have done so and just remade it with new map layouts but putting the locations in roughly the same place). On top of that the story could use quite a bit of a rework with more side quests, plot points and dialogue with npcs, maybe give actual party members/options to save some characters, etc. I definitely probably would only recommend the OG game or the first remake (Adventures on vita/mobile was 3rd...2nd actually also lets you play as the swordsman and heroine and not just the swordsman apparently...never played that version though and think it's on GBA or some other older console so finding a copy may be hard or you may need to set off to the high seas to find it I guess...also can't remember if it was localized or not so you may need to find a fan sub as well). Now for Secret and Trials and maybe even Visions based off the demo they really need better dialogue writing and voice acting direction (and it's not like these VAs are bad, I've heard them do good work in the past so it's probably the VA director not directing them right). Right now I'm finishing up Falcom's The Legend of Heroes: Trails through Daybreak (on finale chapter and halfway done the final day which leads into the final dungeon) and hoping to get it done before Thursday as Visions of Mana releases then (hopefully its good...the demo was OK, could've been a bit better with combat though...we'll see I guess...I did debate on skipping it though as the PS4 was digital only and that ticked me off a bit (if they're gonna release it on the platform make it available both digitally and physically and not just one way or not at all...especially as they have physical for PS5 (and maybe Xbox...is it coming to Xbox?) so it's not like they didn't spend cash on discs anyway. Granted I actually wanted it on Switch for the portability but of course no Switch version even though the console likely can run it as the PS4 runs games like Tales of Arise, Dragon Quest 11, FFVII R part 1, FF XV, and many other higher budget/graphical quality games just fine and they're likely far more intense on the PS4 than Visions will be)).

And I actually agree with a lot of your list event though I haven’t played XV or XVI so I’m not counting those in I would say my favorite openings would be IV, and VIII. Just love that opening where you get introduced to Balamb Garden. Something about schools and training stuff just exited me a lot when I played it back in the days. Oh oh and X-2 for pure nostalgia! Come on that game gets way too much flag

Phooey on those people that judge your opinion. I remember 8 really hit for me as a kid. That music was insane! I gatta agree with you there, that it is stronger than 7. 10 is still epic to this day I love how it sets up the story. 14 has cool cinematic intros for the expansions but that would be a different topic haha. 16 set a new standard for us all. Honestly, I agree with your picks. I almost thought 13 could have been a B since the cinematics are stunning. Other than that good job mate!

FFVII is my favourite in the series and my favourite game of all time. Having said that, I’m putting FFXVI down as the best opening. The way it throws you into an epic Eikon showdown between Phoenix and Ifrit just blew me away and the tragedy of the story that soon followed was brutal!

Thanks for sharing this game, it looks awesome. I'm sad it passed me by at the time.
